Preventing Diabetes in Your Medicare Population

Learning Objectives
1. Explain the epidemiology, clinical evidence, and guidelines regarding diabetes prevention in the Medicare population
2. Describe the Medicare DPP set of services, including content of the services, beneficiary eligibility, and beneficiary enrollment processes
3. Illustrate how screening for prediabetes and referral to MDPP supports completion of Improvement Activities in the MIPS pathway
0.25 Credit CME

This activity is being created to provide a knowledge about two sets of rules that facilitate preventing type 2 diabetes in the Medicare population. CMS will cover the diabetes prevention program (DPP) as a preventive benefit for eligible beneficiaries. Medicare has also created two new Improvement Activities as part of Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS). These Improvement Activities serve as an incentive for physicians to screen their population for prediabetes and refer their eligible patients to the DPP. This module outlines the criteria for patient eligibility for the Medicare DPP, describes the health benefits in referring patients to this evidence-based intervention, and reviews the MIPS activities and relevance for preventing diabetes in older adults.
