Screening, Symptom Recognition, and Referral to Treatment for Eating Disorders in Pediatric Primary Care Settings

The Strategic Training Initiative for the Prevention of Eating Disorders (STRIPED), based at Boston Children's Hospital and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, is offering an online Continuing Medical Education (CME) course: “Screening, Symptom Recognition & Referral to Treatment for Eating Disorders in Pediatric Primary Care Settings.” STRIPED is offering this free online course for primary care providers serving children, adolescents, and young adults.

Effective treatments for a range of eating disorders (EDs) are well-established, yet the majority of those who struggle with an ED never receive treatment. This is especially true for males, transgender and gender nonconforming young people, communities of color, and people living in larger bodies, resulting in significant disparities in diagnosis and treatment. Over the past several years, there has been a growing call for clinical training for pediatric primary care providers focused on how to recognize the signs and symptoms of eating disorders in children, adolescents, and young adults, as well as how to perform screening and appropriately refer patients to specialized care.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of the training, participants will be able to:
1. Recognize the types and consequences of EDs and gaps in care among children, adolescents and young adults in the United States
2. Identify potential signs and symptoms of EDs in children, adolescents, and young adults and perform screening with a validated questionnaire
3. Use an interactive online tool to identify local specialists and refer patients when screening indicates concern
