Financing and Sustaining Upstream Transformation

Learning Objectives
1. Define key concepts and terms related to financial planning and business case development for upstream transformation
2. Describe benefits and challenges in calculating return on investment (ROI) for efforts that seek to improve the social drivers of health inequity
3. Identify different financing and payment models for upstream transformation efforts in health systems and communities

This module reviews introductory financial planning and management concepts as they apply to health initiatives that advance health equity and address social needs and social determinants of health.

Learners will understand key concepts and use cases for defining a business case and calculating not only the return on investment (ROI) for initiatives that seek to improve social drivers of health inequity but alternatives such as value on investment and social ROI.

Finally, learners will understand different financing models, including wellness trusts, social impact bonds, outcomes funds, and other place-based financing models, that can help address common sustainability challenges facing upstream health initiatives.

This is module six of the six-part Upstreamist Core Competencies Series.

Social Workers: This activity will be designated for social work continuing education credits through ASWB.

Athletic Trainers: The National Center OICPD (JA#: 4008105) is approved by the Board of Certification, Inc. to provide continuing education to Athletic Trainers (ATs). This program is eligible for a maximum of .5 Category A hours/CEUs. ATs should claim only those hours actually spent in the educational program.

Other health professionals: This activity was planned by and for the healthcare team, and learners who request it will receive .5 Interprofessional Continuing Education (IPCE) credit for learning and change.
