J-21: African, Black, and Caribbean Voices – Patient Narratives as a Means to Counter Racism and Unconscious Bias in Medicine

Learning Objectives
1. Describe the impact of systemic racism and bias in health care upon individual patients and upon quality of care for underserved individuals
2. Analyze the impact of disparities in health care in the context of broader inequality, including worse health outcomes
3. Explain how the many sources of racism and bias across health systems, institutions, providers, allied health, staff, and in education contribute to disparities
4. Examine their own practices and implement strategies to transform and ensure equality in health care
5. Identify effective interventions to prevent, reduce, or eliminate racism in health care and advance health equity for patients, trainees, and staff

Join the AMA Academic Physicians Section and the Minority Affairs Section for a live session to explore narratives from underserved populations, in particular African, Black, and Caribbean patients, demonstrating their experiences of systemic racism, bias, prejudice, and stereotyping in their interactions with the health care system. Academic physicians and all others interested in progress towards health equity will gain insights into improving trust within the patient-physician relationship and expanding individual stories to actions combating health disparities at the systemic level.
