N-21: Racial Diversity in the Academic Physician “Supply Chain”

Learning Objectives:
1. Report on the impacts of racial bias in entry to and advancement through the medical education “supply chain” upon medical students and physicians as well as patients
2. Develop institution-wide programs to prevent, reduce, or eliminate racial bias in medical education entry and advancement
3. Volunteer for opportunities to mentor minoritized populations to prevent, reduce, or eliminate racial bias in medical education entry and advancement

Join the AMA Academic Physicians Section for a live session to explore the challenges to and opportunities for increasing the racial diversity of the academic physician workforce. Strategies include the need for mentoring and holistic admissions processes throughout the transition points in medical education (into medical school, from medical school to residency, residency to fellowship, and medical education into faculty practice) and systemic support to increase not just recruitment but retention through belonging. Academic physicians and all others interested in health equity will gain insights into this important aspect of progress towards a system of medical education and practice that is fair and equitable for all patients and physicians.
