Ultrasound Examination of the Inferior Vena Cava

Ultrasound examination of respiratory variation in IVC diameter in patients who are hemodynamically unstable may be used to determine whether the patient is potentially responsive to a bolus of intravenous fluids. The vertical white dots in the ultrasound view indicate where M-mode is recorded to evaluate respiratory variation in IVC diameter.
