This video reviews updated definitions of and clinical criteria for diagnosing sepsis and septic shock based on recommendations from an expert task force published in 2016. Under the new definition, sepsis is defined as life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection, where organ dysfunction is defined as an increase in the Sequential [Sepsis-related] Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score of 2 points or more, which is associated with an in-hospital mortality greater than 10%.
