As antibody tests for COVID-19 hit the market, “serology” has become a buzzword. Serologic testing can’t yet tell if individuals are immune to the SARS-CoV-2 virus. But population testing, by quantifying the number of people who have had an antibody response to infection, can help determine whether to maintain or relax strict public health measures on the way toward protective herd immunity.
