Sleep Recording for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Paraplegia

A young patient who has been receiving care for several years for a functional paraplegia and who needed a wheelchair benefited from a video polysomnography with electromyography electrodes on the lower limbs explicitly to look for leg movements during sleep. During this recording, she spontaneously flexed her thighs and extended her legs to reposition herself during brief awakenings. Electromyography leads placed on the tibialis anterior and rectus femoris muscles recorded abundant muscle activity, contrasting with the absence of activity recorded before sleep. These elements confirmed the diagnosis of functional neurological disorder (FND). These video clips were shown, explained, and given to her to be viewed regularly and to possibly guide motor rehabilitation. Two months later, she was able to walk with human assistance.
