Real-Time Volumetric Review and Analysis of Intraoperative Wide-Field Optical Coherence Tomography Imaging Data

Intraoperative assessment of oropharyngeal specimens is essential to effective oncologic surgery. This traditionally involves assessment of margin status with frozen section analysis. Unfortunately, this process is not perfect, and it can be hard to correlate histopathologic specimens to in vivo disease. Using adjunct intraoperative imaging to assist the surgeon’s resection has become an important new area of discovery. Wide-field optical coherence tomography is one of these novel adjuncts and can provide high-resolution images without affecting standard of care or deforming the specimen. This video demonstrates the side-by-side real-time comparison of the tonsillar specimen and the wide-field optical coherence tomography images that were acquired from the same specimen. This analysis allows the surgeon to assess the volumetric specimen and imaging data in a scrollable form similar to traditional imaging studies. Click the Related Article link for full details.
