Continuous Internal Monitoring of Subretinal Fluid Drainage Using Indirect Ophthalmoscopy

While monitoring the drainage of subretinal fluid with indirect ophthalmoscopy, the retina can be seen fluttering, indicating unimpeded drainage of fluid. Absence of this fluttering may signify a serious complication such as retinal incarceration. During drainage, a cotton-tipped applicator is used to massage the subretinal fluid toward the drainage site. The retina is seen to flatten, without impediment to flow, as the last of the subretinal fluid drains.
