Using Non-opioid Medications: Practical Guidance for Pain Management

This activity focuses on the mechanism, clinical usefulness, and adverse events of non-opioid medications in selected patients with acute or chronic pain, including those with neuropathic pain. Key categories include acetaminophen, salicylates and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, classic tricyclic antidepressants, and drugs originally approved for marketing as antiepileptic drugs. The use of topical agents for localized nociceptive, inflammatory, and neuropathic pain also is considered.
