Using Opioids Safely: Practical Guidance for Pain Management

This activity reviews the nature and extent of opioid-related morbidity and mortality over the past 20 years (“opioid epidemic”) and notes the evolution in clinical guidelines on the use of opioids for pain management during that time frame, including the most recent guidance issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Recent regulatory and legislative activities designed to reduce opioid supplies are summarized. Attention also is devoted to opioid classifications, mechanism, indications, adverse effects and risks. Emphasis is on a universal precautions approach to opioid prescribing, including screening, risk mitigation strategies, and monitoring, and the need to have an exit strategy in place when the risks of chronic opioid therapy exceed benefits, including tapering and discontinuation.
