Online Courses for Kentucky CME Requirements

Kentucky State Continuing Medical Education (CME) Requirements

  • Credit amount: Kentucky requires 60 hours of CME credits per licensure cycle.
  • Licensure cycle: 3 years, ending on Dec. 31.
  • Topics: 30 hours of the required 60 must be earned from courses or programs that are AMA PRA Category 1™ credit or AOA Category 1 CME with the following topical requirements:
    • Primary care physicians who were licensed after July 1, 1996 are required to complete 3 hours of domestic violence CME within 3 years of their initial licensure.
    • There are 4.5 hours of prescribing controlled substances CME for physicians who are authorized to prescribe or distribute controlled substances in Kentucky. This CME is required every three year CME cycle period.
    • Pediatricians, radiologists, family practitioners, emergency medicine and urgent care physicians are required to complete 1 hour of pediatric abusive head trauma CME within 5 years of initial licensure.

    The CME requirements listed above were accurate when posted, but CME state requirements change frequently. Due to COVID-19, certain states may have modified their licensure requirements. Physicians are advised to confirm Kentucky‘s requirements with the Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure website.

    The Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure (KBML) is Kentucky’s governing body for CME and medical license requirements. The KBML’s mission is to:

    “protect the public by ensuring that only qualified medical and osteopathic physicians are licensed and initiating disciplinary action when violations of the Medical Practice Act occur.”
